Wales A country with several distinct regions, each with its own characteristic atmosphere. Our North Wales area covers the counties of Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Conwy, Anglesey and Gwynedd which also include the Snowdonia National Park. The Mid-Wales area covers Ceredigion and Powys which includes the Brecon Beacons National Park. Pembrokeshire is known as the "little bit of England beyond Wales" where Welsh is rarely spoken and is certainly not the native language of the majority of residents. Then there is South Wales, an area with a rich industrial heritage, particularly in the valleys, but where there are now only small remnants of the traditional industries of steel and coal production for which the area became famous. Coking coal from here was so sought after that it was shipped all over the world. One destination was the small town of Jerome, high on a hillside in Arizona, to which it was carried first by sailing boat across the Atlantic, round Cape Horn, up the west coast of the USA and finally on mule trains over mountains to be used in this centre of copper production. |
